Terms of use
Last updated: October 28, 2026
The short version: MouthRead is an early-stage accessibility tool for captions and communication. It is often wrong, it is not a medical device, it is not for emergencies or critical medical decisions, and you may only point it at people who know and agree.
1. Who runs MouthRead
MouthRead (mouthread.com, its web demo, its captions page and any MouthRead app) is operated by PDX Flower Guy LLC, an Oregon limited liability company, Portland, Oregon, USA ("we", "us"). Contact: hello@mouthread.com.
2. Agreeing to these terms
- By using MouthRead you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don't agree, please don't use it.
- MouthRead is not directed to children under 13. If you are under 18, use it with a parent or guardian who agrees to these terms.
3. Only use it on people who agree
- Only point the camera at yourself or at people who know you're doing it and are OK with it.
- Never use MouthRead to watch, record or read the lips of strangers or anyone who hasn't agreed. MouthRead is an accessibility tool, never a surveillance tool.
- Don't use it to spy, harass or stalk anyone, or to break any law, including laws about recording people and their conversations. You are responsible for getting any consent the law requires.
4. Not a medical device. Not for emergencies.
- MouthRead is not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, monitor or prevent any condition, and it does not give medical advice.
- Do not use MouthRead in an emergency or to make or communicate critical medical decisions (for example consent to treatment, medication, allergies or end-of-life wishes). For those, use qualified interpreters, written confirmation, and the communication tools your care team provides.
- It does not replace sign language interpreters, professional (CART) captioning, hearing care, speech therapy, nurse call buttons, or talking with a clinician.
- In an emergency, call 911 (or your local emergency number) or use the nurse call button.
5. Accuracy limits
- Speech-to-text captions can miss or change words, especially with noise, accents, several speakers, or a weak connection.
- Lip reading is hard for people and for computers. Many sounds look the same on the lips. Lips-only guesses are experimental and are wrong much of the time, and worse on dark, choppy, side-on or far-away video.
- The Phrase Board and text-to-speech show or say only what the user taps.
- Always confirm with the person what they actually meant.
6. The Record & guess research demo
Our lips-only "Record & guess" feature uses a lip-reading model published by university researchers (Ma et al., Imperial College London) whose license allows non-commercial research use only. So Record & guess is offered only as a free, non-commercial research demo on the mouthread.com website. It is not part of any paid MouthRead plan or the MouthRead app, it carries no advertising, and it may change or be removed at any time. We will not charge for lips-only reading unless we have a model whose license allows it.
7. Free features, future paid features
- The current features are free. They may change, break or go offline at any time.
- If we offer paid features later, the price and any extra terms will be shown clearly before you pay.
8. Open-source software and other services
MouthRead uses open-source software and some third-party services (for example your browser's speech recognition and Hugging Face for the research demo). Their licenses and notices are on our licenses page. Third-party services have their own terms.
9. No warranty
MouthRead is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, PDX Flower Guy LLC and its members, employees and contractors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss or harm that comes from relying on captions, guesses or phrases shown by MouthRead. Our total liability for any claim about MouthRead is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for MouthRead in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you; nothing here limits rights you have that can't be waived by law.
11. Your responsibility
If you misuse MouthRead (for example by recording people without their agreement) and that leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs from that claim, to the extent the law allows.
12. The MouthRead name and site
The MouthRead name, logo, text and website design belong to PDX Flower Guy LLC. Open-source parts remain under their own licenses. Please don't copy our name or design in a way that suggests you are us.
13. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oregon, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Multnomah County, Oregon, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it elsewhere.
14. Changes and contact
We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and for big changes we'll say so on the site. Questions? Email hello@mouthread.com.
